On my Instagram reels, I’ve often made recommendations for books that might help caregivers. One day, a follower messaged me and asked if I could recommend a book for the one being cared for.
“Not a long book…more devotional style…but reflects on finding peace amidst life’s many changes and health setbacks and having to change lifestyle because of limitations (no driving, friends have died, family deaths, moved from house).”
What a great idea! I began asking for recommendations from members of the caregiver support group I attend and other caregivers I know. Here is a list of suggested books:
God Is My Hiding Place: 40 Devotions for Refuge and Strength by Corrie ten Boom
Take Heart: 100 Devotions to Seeing God When Life’s Not OK edited by Grace Cho and Anna Rendell
Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn’t Make Sense by Paul David Tripp
Prayers for Hope and Healing: Seeking God’s Strength as You Face Health Challenges by Sarah Forgrave
While these books may not address the specific needs this person hoped to see covered, they can point loved ones to the One who sees to all our needs and brings comfort in every situation. When our loved ones find peace, we caregivers experience peace, knowing Jesus is shouldering burdens we were never meant to bear and compensating for losses we cannot restore.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18 ESV
Tracy Crump dispenses hope in her award-winning book, Health, Healing, and Wholeness: Devotions of Hope in the Midst of Illness (CrossLink Publishing: 2021). A former intensive care nurse, she cared for her parents and her mother-in-law and understands both the burdens and joys of caregiving. Her devotions have been featured in Guideposts books, The Upper Room, and many other publications, and she has contributed 25 stories to Chicken Soup for the Soul® books. She also conducts writing workshops, produces a newsletter for writers, and does freelance editing. But her most important job is Grandma to five completely unspoiled grandchildren.
Tracy, thank you for the list and to the person who requested it.
You’re welcome, Diana!
Thank you Tracy! This was very helpful! A great reminder that God’s love meets us wherever we are.
So true, Val!
